Unit 8: Specialty Techniques

This is the unit you’ve been waiting for! Do you want to digitize lace? How about applique, cutwork, patches or badges, 3D applique, fringe, 3D foam, redwork, quilting, embosssing, or trapunto? Would you like to create designs that are larger than your hoop and have a way to connect them seamlessly at your machine? ALL of this is covered in this unit!

If you think you can just start with this unit without going through the others, you will be hard-pressed if you don’t have previous experience equivalent to what’s been covered in the prior units. You need to know Generations reasonably well to complete the exercises in this installment. Or, if you’ve just raced through the course without assimilating the content or doing any of the exercises, you will find yourself referring back to previous units for help.

Here’s what my number one proofer had to say about this unit:

I have just finished reading through Unit 8. WOW, WOW, WOW!!! As with the other 7, number 8 is extremely well written and so full of knowledge – you have done such a fantastic job. Generations owners are very lucky indeed!

As with other units, all the necessary image files are included for the projects. I’ve also included several sample .GEN files with this unit. The ebook is 180 pages and includes 7 embedded videos and 10 external videos for a total of almost 2.5 hours of run time. You also have the opportunity to send in your final project for evaluation.

I’ve purposely kept the projects simple: detailed enough for you to learn the technique and simple enough not to bog you down on something that is not exactly what you want to create. Think of them as mini-projects, not intended to be a full complete project, rather, just enough to demonstrate a practical use and give you a chance to try out the technique.

We’ll spend a fair amount of time on appliqué because it is popular technique among embroiderers and offers a wide range of versatility. Appliqué is the most useful of the specialty techniques covered in this unit and is also the basis for other techniques such as cutwork and free standing designs. You may not be interested in all the techniques covered here and may wish to just use this unit for future reference as the need arises. I do recommend that you at least work through the first few lessons to understand appliqué. You may pick up some new ways of working with purchased appliqué designs and a couple of neat tricks with Generations™.
