Unit 5: Creating Pattern, Texture, & Dimension

In this unit we start getting into cool stuff. Even if you auto-digitize to get the design going. there’s no reason why you have to leave it at just that!

If you’ve ever tried applying a motif without adjusting any of the settings, you may not have been happy with the results Generations does not remember individual motif settings nor does it look at the actual dimensions of the original to determine an initial value. And, if you save settings for a particular motif and then reload those settings, they become the new default settings. I’ll show you how to work with motifs and get the most out this feature.

Embossing is a great way to add texture and realism and control stitch lengths in a satin. It was on my “must have” list when I was researching my first program once I outgrew CSII. However,  embossing is exceedingly problematic in Generations and if you use it, you definitely need to understand how, when, and why it breaks so you can avoid problems.

Gradient fills are another wonderful automatic feature. Used incorrectly, they can really run up stitch counts and create that “bullet proof” feeling. This is true in any program. I’ll show you to master the controls in Generations as well as which ones don’t work and how to work around them.

I’m a real digitizer and for one year, I’ve committed to using Generations to digitize new designs. I’m not just a company educator showing off particular features in the program and avoiding ones that are broken. I’m committed to pushing this program to do what it says it does.

If you’d like to get the most out of your software investment, then you need to invest in learning it!
